History of Bais Velvel

Years ago, when the weather was too severe for individuals in the neighborhood to make it to Shul on Erev Shabbos, a makeshift Minyan was organized in the 10 Mile and Greenfield subdivision in Southfield. The Minyan site was chosen as needed.

In the early 1990's, Wolf Katz (nicknamed Velvel) was unable to make it outside his home due to a progressing illness. From then on, the minyan was held exclusively in his basement. Mr. Katz's condition deteriorated further, so the Minyan evolved into one that not only took place Erev Shabbos when there was inclement weather, but became a weekly Minyan offering Mincha and Ma'ariv Erev Shabbos and Yom Tov, Shabbos and Yom Tov day, and Motzai Shabbos and Yom Tov. The Minyan also benefited a few elderly gentlemen in the neighborhood who had difficulty getting to a Minyan.

In 1994, Wolf Katz was confined to his bed due to paralysis and the need for a ventilator. He was cared for in his home. The Minyan, formally named the Bais Velvel Minyan, continued on in his basement and provided T'filah for Wolf Katz's Refuah through his 9 years of care.

Although Wolf Katz passed away on January 28, 2003, at the request of his wife Clara, the Minyan continues on in his memory.
